Taking the Grand Tour: A Look Inside Marvel Studios HQ and Future MCU Films

It’s one thing when Marvel Studios decides to release news on the upcoming films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s something else entirely when the fans that exist within the press get to spend a couple hours seeing hidden gems from the source at Disney’s lot in Burbank, California.

Thanks to Disney, Marvel Studios, and Principal Communications, TheWrap was lucky enough to embark inside, given easter eggs on what we’re to see in films like Thor: RagnarokBlack Panther and Captain Marvel.

Thor: Ragnarok will feature the character of Korg. The Kronan was also featured in the Planet Hulk comic book story, a version of which we will also see play out in Thor: Ragnarok. Designs, effects, and animations were shown by the film’s director Taika Watiti, who also happens to be portraying Korg in motion capture! It’s a wonder how much of Hulk’s story will be seen alongside Thor’s, and if Korg will engage in battle with the both of them.

It was also nice to see that Feige himself says they spend “13 to 15 hours a day on all these movies” and that filmmakers, writers, directors and even actors all collaborate in this one place. Speaking of the production of films, Black Panther (for which the press got to see a sizzle reel of) finishes production in a couple of days and will be back on the lot to be edited by the end of the week. The sizzle reel showed off Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa himself, and first looks at Lupita Nyong’o as Nikia & Forest Whittaker as Zuri. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 just finished editing while Thor: Ragnarok is currently being edited.

In the Visual Development room of the lot, Andy Park, Lead Concept Artist for Characters at Marvel Studios, showed off designs for Thanos, Ant-Man/Giant Man, Hope Van Dyne’s Wasp, and even a first look at Brie Larson in her Captain Marvel costume. The costume was said to be “comic book accurate” with “an updated take” to what she looked like in the comic run from 2012 to 2013, but we’ll have to wait to see it in the film!
