The Return To Lian Yu And Arrow’s Next Chapter (Speculation)

Arrow’s season 5 has proven to be one of its best. This season has been about coming full circle. We’ve seen Oliver battle against an enemy of his own doing, Prometheus, son of one of The Hood’s first victims from season 1. From what we’ve heard from Wendy Mericle (one of the shows executive producers), we’ll see Oliver ally himself with someone unexpected and possibly some deaths.

We know Oliver will return to Lian Yu, the place that made him who he is, and meet once again Slade Wilson, the man who helped shape him into who he is.

Plot-wise, it all point towards Oliver coming to Wilson for help to bring down Prometheus. The question is, how’s he going to get Deathstroke to assist him.  Oliver’s certainly not in Slade’s good graces, so what could be possibly the motive for this collaboration remains unknown.

Regarding to the development I have to say, in my opinion, this is a great move. This season finale marks the ending of a chapter for the Green Arrow. As viewers know, this season will be the last with flashbacks, since we’ve already seen what Ollie did during his five years away.

I’d like to think this reflects not only that journey, but also the journey we’ve seen him take since his return from the Hood to the Green Arrow. I have a feeling that this season finale will be about Oliver finally coming to terms with all he’s gone through during the last 10 years of his life, about the man these circumstances turned him into, and the man he must be moving forward.

Therefore the need of a catalyst to drive the future season is needed. It’s my assumption that the deaths that have been teased will act as one.

There’s no evidence in regards of who it may be. In my perspective, deaths in this show haven’t been done just to shock the audience, but as a mean to drive the plot. Even in cases where they were, in my opinion misused, I truly believe the writers made these decisions to push the boundaries of Oliver Queen’s character. I don’t think this case will be any different. This death has to have an impact on Oliver, emotional or otherwise. It should push Oliver into who he’ll be in season 6. Saying that, I don’t believe the show would kill John Diggle or Felicity Smoak, either death would destroy Oliver. It’s also safe to assume it won’t be René (Rick Gonzalez) or Dinah (Juliana Harkavy), since both actors have been pushed up to series regulars.

Nyssa al Ghul (Katrina Law), Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne), Thea Queen (Willa Holland)
My list of possible characters:

-Nyssa al Ghul (Katrina Law), we know she’ll be fighting against her half-sister: Talia al Ghul. Oliver has grown to care about Nyssa, as we, so her death could have an emotional toll on him. However, Nyssa keeps being a fan-favorite, so maybe the writers won’t risk losing the opportunity to bring her back once in a while.

– Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne), I have to say watching Oliver and Quentin work things out and have the relationship they have today has been heart-warming. This will most certainly weigh on Oliver, but the main reason why I have included him is the impact his death could have over Earth-2 Laurel Lance, Black Siren. Katie Cassidy will return as a series regular in season 6, maybe as a villain or perhaps she’ll join Team Arrow (which I don’t think).

– Thea Queen (Willa Holland), the only reason why she’s on the list is because we have seen her in only a couple of episodes this season. However I think her death could destroy Oliver, and we have already seen her die and come back to life with the Lazarus Pit, so killing her now wouldn’t really make sense.

-None of the above. Honestly I prefer this option. Perhaps this death won’t be one of Oliver’s loved ones or allies, but maybe it would be a death that makes Oliver once again re-think his actions.

From everything we’ve learned the last couple of weeks we can certainly expect intense, action-filled episodes that will also work as a bridge to connect to the new chapter of our hero’s journey. With some fan-favorites, these episodes are crafted specially to those who have joined Oliver’s crusade from the very start. This season’s climax is looking extremely promising.
