Donald Glover Penned Deadpool Animated Series While Shooting Han Solo Film

Earlier this year, Atlanta creators Donald and Stephen Glover were announced to be the showrunners, executive producers and writers for the untitled Deadpool animated series. Recently, FX Chief Executive Officer John Landgraf gave an update on the project during the last day of the TV Critics Association press tour.

According to Landgraf, Donald Glover is working with a writing staff while shooting the untitled Han Solo film in London. He is said to have completed the scripts for Atlanta‘s second season before having departed for London. Upon arrival back to the states, he will start production on the show’s season as well as begin animation on the Deadpool series.

Landgraf compromised with Donald’s schedule for both Deadpool and Atlanta:

“Working with talent, you don’t want to squelch their [opportunities]. You don’t want to say don’t do the Star Wars movie and play the first African-American character in cinema who inspired you when you were young. You want to figure it out so we juggle people’s schedules.”

In the live-action world, Deadpool 2 is in production with Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as the eponymous character Wade Wilson/ Deadpool, Morena Baccarin (Gotham ) as Vanessa/ Copycat, T.J. Miller (Silicon ValleyHow to Train Your Dragon) as Weasel, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Stefan Kapičić as Colossus. Josh Brolin (The Goonies, Hollow ManMen in Black 3, Infinity War) joined the cast as Nathan Summers/ Cable. In addition, fellow Atlanta actress Zazie Beetz has been added as Domino. Their involvement in the films will also pave way for future projects in the X-Men cinematic universe dealing with Deadpool and the X-Force.

On the other hand, Landgraf says the Deadpool animated series will be different with the Glovers’ touch:

“It’ll be really different from the movies. [The series is] animated and [the movies are] live-action, but also it has a different tone and editorial voice as evidenced by Donald and Stephen Glover, who have their own voice and tone. We really wanted to make something that was distinctly different from the movies.”

FX showcased some footage of the series, in which the character jumped onto a moving car. As of yet, Landgraf is unsure when the series will air.

“We’ve picked it up to series but I can’t tell you when it’s going to be scheduled yet because it’s gotta be great.”

For the time being, release dates for the FX television shows Atlanta Season 2 and the untitled Deadpool animated series have not been announced.
