The Defenders S01E04: Royal Dragon – Recap And Review

The last couple of minutes of Worst Behaviour left viewers with our four heroes running into each other and fighting together in Midland Circle, a place where the investigations each of them were going through took them.

Beware spoilers for this episode ahead

A brief  recap of what happened in the episode:

  • They manage to leave Midland and find shelter in a Chinese restaurant. They hole themselves up and start learning about each other and trying to make sense of what’s happening. Matt’s reluctant to this and to this team-up but decides to trust Danny and Luke with his identity after a conversation with Jessica.

  • Stick shows up and sheds some light on what is going on and about what The Hand is and what they are capable of. Jessica is, of course, skeptical about all of this, making it clear she only cares about solving her case and whatever is going on is way over her head. She leaves and while clearing her files regarding the case she finds a lead that leads to Alexandra, who’s been alive for apparently for hundreds of years.
  • Jessica goes to warn her client how deep the case of her husband’s death truly goes and finds out that The Hand has been surveilling the family.
  • Alexandra shows up a the restaurant, which apparently wasn’t as safe as it seemed, and brings Elektra along with her. Jessica returns to the restaurant (and pushes a car through it) and joins Danny, Matt, and Luke to fight Elektra.

This episode didn’t really have action, nonetheless, it was phenomenal. It was an episode about these heroes getting to know each other and defining the dynamics in the team. Even though at first none of them appears to trust the other, the episode revolves around them building that trust and respect for one another. Viewers get to see the beginning of Luke and Danny’s epic friendship and get a tease of the future of Jessica and Luke’s relationship, whatever it will be. Although Matt and Jessica seem opposed to being part of this team, it feels rewarding to see them acknowledge the potential they all have together and be willing to join forces and save New York City.

These characters continue to be complicated and each one carries their own heavy baggage, seeing them slowly becoming the heroes they are meant to be, and seeing them do it together, is quite exhilarating and promising for this growing Netflix MCU.
