Joss Whedon’s Ex-Wife Claims His Feminist Ideals Are Hypocritical

In a personal blog, distributed by TheWrap, Joss Whedon’s ex-wife, Kai Cole, revealed some personal details about her time being married to the writer and director. Their twenty-one year marriage ended in 2016, and Cole claims that, “misinformation” surrounding the divorce needed to be cleared up. She starts off by talking about how the two met, while she drove across the country while Joss was in LA working on his Buffy the Vampire Slayer script. From there, Cole talked about moments where Joss paid other women more attention than he did his own wife. She then claims that when their marriage was over, Joss admitted to having different affairs over the course of their marriage.

Kai Cole then goes on to talk about how, in her own words, “... he [Joss] used his relationship with me as a shield, both during and after our marriage, so no one would question his relationships with other women or scrutinize his writing as anything other than feminist.” She proceeds to mention that she is writing for people to understand who Whedon truly is. Also, she reaches out to those that praise him and give him awards for his feminist beliefs, urging them to think again before awarding him for his work with feminism.

A representative of Whedon’s responded to Joss’ ex-wife’s claims on the director’s behalf. “While this account includes inaccuracies and misrepresentations which can be harmful to their family, Joss is not commenting, out of concern for his children and out of respect for his ex-wife.”
