Bohemian Rhapsody Review

November started with a bang with the release of the biopic about Britain’s famous band queen and its singer, Freddie Mercury. But does this new look at the legendary band do the story justice?

Bohemian Rhapsody tells the story of how the famous rock band, Queen, was formed and how it rose to fame. It also depicts the most impactful events in the life of the band’s lead singer, Freddie Mercury.

Where do I begin with this review? Let’s start with the soundtrack. The greatest hits of Queen are weaved into numerous scenes throughout the movie, and it never got old. In fact, it made the movie more fun to watch. At some points, the people in my theater would sing along with the music.

The biggest element of the movie was the acting and the production design. Rami Malek completely nails the role of Freddie Mercury. His embodiment of the rock icon will likely get him an Oscar nomination if you ask me. The supporting cast, including a brief appearance by Mike Myers, brings their A game as well. The production team did a perfect job at recreating famous Queen performances. I never got tired of seeing all of Freddie’s outfits.

Although there’s a lot of good qualities in Bohemian Rhapsody, it is not perfect. The pacing can be a bit jarring to some as it picks up really fast and then hits hard periods of slow moments. The movie does a great job at capturing the spirit of the band’s history, but the timeline of events is slightly off from the actual events.

Despite its little hiccups, Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the best movies this year.

8.5/10
